Madam Speaker, Honourable Members of the House of Assembly,
Allow me to express heartfelt thanks to you for inviting my wife and I to the First Meeting of the First Session of the Ninth Parliament. I also warmly welcome and embrace the opportunity to address you on this important occasion.
2014 Christmas Message by His Excellency Charles A. Savarin, D.A.H, President of the Commonwealth of Dominica.
My fellow Citizens and Residents of Dominica,
Christmas is an occasion to celebrate the birth of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and to appreciate the selflessness of God's love that he should send his only begotten son to live among us and to die for our sins. Therefore we should not merely celebrate the Birth of Christ as an event of history, or as a time to engage in reckless abandon with wine, food and music but rather as a time to reunite with family and friends, a time to help those in need, to give hope to those in despair, and to show them the kindness of heart and the generosity and love that is consistent with the message of the Christ Child, the Prince of Peace.
My fellow citizens, residents and visitors to our fair Isle, it is indeed a pleasure for me to address a message to you for a second time on the occasion of the observance of the Anniversary of our Independence. Thirty-six (36) years ago, on 3rd November 1978, as a manifestation of our will and desire to take charge of our own affairs and to be masters of our own destiny, we declared our Independence from Britain. We were at the time faced with many challenges. We were nevertheless, determined that if we did not confront these challenges and seek to undertake our own development, no one would do it for us.
